Academy Update: Red Bulls return to action on the road

Saturday April 18, 2015 at Revere High School (Revere, MA) - The Red Bulls U-18 Academy recorded a convincing 5-1 win on the road against FC Bolts Celtic in the first of a weekend doubleheader.


The Red Bulls came close to opening the scoring in the first half on several occasions. The best chance fell to forward Wes Wade but he blasted over from close range. Despite dominating possession the Red Bulls entered half time tied 0-0. The second half saw the U18’s put on a dominant display. In the 49th minute, defender Marcelo Borges converted a penalty kick after Breno Lustosa was tripped inside the box. The lead was doubled in the 51st minute when Borges played a pass to Ethan Lochner on the left wing, Lochner dribbled inside a blasted a shot in from 20 yards out.


Forward Juan Sebastian Sanchez scored his 13th goal of the season after some neat combination play. Midfielder Conrad Nowowiejski flicked a pass in behind the Bolts backline that Sanchez ran onto and finished into the lower right corner of the goal. FC Bolts pulled back a goal in the 70th minute from a corner kick. However, the U-18’s responded quickly in the 70th minute when Man of the Match, Lustosa, whipped in a great cross from the right side that Nowowiejski headed in from six yards out. Sanchez completed the scoring in the 77th minute from another Lustosa cross.

Sunday April 19, 2015 at Gillette Stadium (Foxborough, MA) - The Red Bulls U-18 Academy continued where they left off on Saturday as they played brilliantly in the opening half against MLS rival academy New England Revolution on Sunday.


Forward Ethan Lochner opened the scoring in the 12th minute when he received a pass from Wes Wade, dribbled across the penalty box and curled a right footed shot into the upper corner of the goal from 25 yards. Wade was the provider again in the 29th minute as he slipped in forward Juan Sebastian Sanchez for his team leading 15th goal of the season.


Lochner completed the first half scoring in the 35th minute. After picking off a pass in the midfield, Lochner dribbled towards goal and blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the goals from 25 yards again. Defender and Man of the Match Marcelo Borges completed the Red Bulls scoring in the 49th minute with a curling free kick from 20 yards out. The U18’s were unlucky not to build on the lead in the 75th minute when Cameron Harr saw his chip shot over the Revolution goalkeeper hit the crossbar. The Revolution pulled back a goal in the 86th minute to make the final score 4-1.


"We knew before the game that we had to come out strong against an MLS academy side," Man of the Match Marcello Borges said. "I thought we stepped up to the challenge very well. Hard work, determination, and team work each played a role in the team's success. Today's performance showed that the team is continuously moving in the right direction and striving for perfection every week."

Red Bull U-16's (2) at FC Bolts Celtic (1)

Saturday April 18, 2015 at Revere High School (Revere, MA) - The Red Bulls kicked off the first of two games in two days with a hard fought away victory at FC Bolts.


The Red Bulls opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Jeanpaul Marin played the ball to Zaire Bartley at the top of the penalty area. Bartley's side footed strike fell into the top corner from 18 yards out for a 1-0 Red Bulls lead.


FC Bolts made a strong start to the second half and scored in the first minute to level score. A good cross from the Red Bulls left side was volleyed in at the far post to put the Bolts on level terms.


The U-16's regained their composure and took back the lead eight minutes later. Jared Gilbey made a driving run at the Bolts backline before playing the ball into Brian Saramago at the top of the box. Saramago made no mistake with a clinical finish into the bottom corner for his 16th goal of the season.


The Red Bulls backline held firm to protect the lead and secure the team 15th win of the season.


 “It was a tough game on the road as expected, but we ground out the win," goal scorer Zaire Batley said.

Red Bull U-16's (1) at New England Revolution (3)

Sunday April 19, 2015 at Gillette Stadium (Foxborough, MA) - The Red Bulls lost their first game of the season to New England Revolution 3-1 at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. The Red Bulls had the first chance of the game when a good spell of possession ended with the ball being played into Rodrigo D’Andrea inside the penalty area. D’Andrea attempted to go around the goalkeeper who did just enough to force him wide and keep the teams on level terms.


 It was the Revolution who would strike first with a goal midway through the first half. The Revs countered quickly with a well-timed run and finish to give the home team a 1-0 lead.


The athletic qualities of the Revs forward line and speed of their counter attack would cause the Red Bulls defense issues all game. The Red Bulls pushed numbers forward early in the second half and were caught on the counter when a move broke down on the Red Bulls left side. An impressive counter attack that started on the New England end line and ended in the back of Red Bulls goal, gave the Revs a two goal advantage.


Red Bulls rallied and created two excellent chances to get back into the game. Brian Saramago hit the wood work with a driven shot across the goalkeeper and Ryan Mingachos went close with a header from a Red Bull set play. It was Omir Fernandez who got Red Bulls back into the game with a headed goal from a Saramago cross. Fernandez recorded his 12th USDA goal of the season after entering the game at halftime.


New England restored its two goal cushion in the 67th minute to close out the match and give the Red Bulls U-16 its first defeat in USDA play this season.


'Tough loss today against a good opponent," captain Mason Deeds said. "The team has been playing extremely well for the past few weeks and the loss today is just a test of the teams ability to bounce back from adversity. I am confident in the team's character to take the positives from today's game, and to use it for the development of our team in the future.'

Red Bull U-13/14's (4) at FC Bolts Celtic (1)

Sunday April 19, 2015 at Revere High School (Revere, MA) - The 2001 Red Bulls pre-academy were away in Massachusetts to play against the FC Bolts Celtic on Sunday.  Despite the long bus ride and a few injuries the Red Bulls managed to pull off a decisive 4-1 victory over the Bolts.  


Forward Leo Hecht opened the scoring early from an assist by Aziel Jackson.  A few moments later Jordan May would add his name to the score sheet heading the ball passed the Bolts keeper.  


The Red Bulls would finish the half 2-0 and continue to dictate the tempo of the game from the start of the second half.  Aziel Jackson finished off a well played pass from Jordan May to make it 3-0.


Although the Bolts would get one back later from the penalty spot, May and Jackson would combine yet again for the team's fourth and final goal of the match.

Red Bull U-12 White (9) at BW Gottschee (2)

Saturday April 18, 2015 at Brennan Field (Middle Village, NY) - The U-12 Red Bulls were back in action on Saturday, April 18 on a hot 75 degree day in New York City where they faced local rival Gottschee. The White team kicked off first at 1pm, winning 9-2.
