New York Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips has been voted MLS Player of the Week for Week 10 after netting a brace in the inaugural New York Derby to lead the Red Bulls to a 2-1 win over NYC FC on Sunday, as voted by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).
The 2014 MLS Golden Boot winner started the derby in style, putting home a short cross from Lloyd Sam in just the fourth minute. BWP increased the lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute, connecting on a low cross that was whipped in by Sacha Kljestan to finish off a counter attack and give the home side, already playing with 10 men, some insurance.
With his first goal of the evening, Wright-Phillips moved into fifth place on the franchise’s all-time scoring list. His second tally also marked his seventh multi-goal match, tied for third in team history.
This is the third MLS Player of the Week award for the English striker after receiving honors twice during the 2014 campaign, when he tied the league record for goals in a season with 27.
Wright-Phillips and the Red Bulls are off to Dallas this weekend for a Friday night showdown with FC Dallas, who are off to a 6-2-2 start and sit atop the Western Conference. Kickoff on Friday night is slated for 9 p.m. ET on Univision. Fans can use the SAP function for English commentary, or tune in to www.newyorkredbulls.com/Livefor Red Bulls Internet Radio.
The team returns home on Sunday, May 24, for a meeting with rival Philadelphia Union at 5 p.m. Tickets for all Red Bulls home games are available through www.newyorkredbulls.com/tickets.
