Chasing 28: Bradley Wright-Phillips is three goals away from breaking the record with two games left

After going two games without a goal, New York Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips got back on the scoresheet on Saturday night when he scored against Toronto FC in the 26th minute (WATCH IT HERE).

That strike raised his season total to 25, just two shy from tying the single season record held by Chris Wondolowski (2012) and Roy Lassiter (1996).

Wright-Phillips is on pace with Wondolowski as the San Jose striker entered his last two matches of the 2012 season with 25 goals, too. In 1996, Lassiter had 24 goals with two games left to play.

The Red Bulls will face the Columbus Crew at Red Bull Arena on Sunday (3 pm ET, Unimas), a team that has conceded just 12 goals in their last 10 games. But Wright-Phillips has scored in each of his previous two games against the Crew this season.

New York then travels to play Sporting Kansas City in the very last match-up of the MLS regular season (Sunday, Oct. 26 at 8:30 pm ET, ESPN2 and TSN2). After a bumpy August and September SKC's backline seems to have righted the ship, collecting clean sheets in each of their last two games. But just like he has against Columbus, Wright-Phillips has also scored in each of his two games against SKC this season.

Both Sporting KC and the New York Red Bulls may have already clinched postseason berths from the East this past weekend, but between their battle to avoid the Knockout Round match and Wright-Phillips' record chase, that final match will have plenty riding on it.
