Get to Know: Ben Mines

The New York Red Bulls signed Academy midfielder Ben Mines to a Homegrown contract on January 8, 2018.

The signing was the club’s 19th Homegrown player signed to the first team, tying them for the most in MLS with FC Dallas.

The Ridgefield, Connecticut native joined the Red Bulls Academy in 2013 and has also featured as an amateur for NYRB II, the club’s United Soccer League affiliate.

After appearing in five games for the USL Champions in 2016, Mines tallied his first professional goal on May 20, 2017 for NYRB II in the 69th minute against Ottawa Fury FC at MSU Soccer Park. He ended the 2017 USL season with two goals scored in 212 minutes played.

In the past two academy seasons, Mines has scored 18 goals and recorded 23 assists. Additionally, he won the Golden Boot at the 2017 USDA Generation Adidas Cup, when the Red Bulls finished third overall in the Champions Division, the toughest division in the tournament.

Mines will become the team’s youngest player on the roster at 17 years of age, next to Tyler Adams.
