GIACOMETTI: Jesse Marsch excited for Anatole Abang ahead of "great opportunity" with Cameroon -

HANOVER, N.J. – At just 19-years-old, Anatole Abang is on the precipice of starting his international career at the senior level.

A native of Yaounde, Cameroon, Abang has previously received caps at both the U-17 and U-20 level for his national side. But after a solid debut campaign for the New York Red Bulls in 2015, Abang has earned a look from newly appointed head coach Hugo Broos.

“He’s going to the national team for the first time, so we’re really excited for him,” New York head coach Jesse Marsch said.

Abang featured mostly off the bench during his first season with the Red Bulls, making 17 appearances and scoring four goals along the way. His “super sub” role has continued into 2016, as the target striker has seen minutes late in the second half in both of New York’s first two matches of the season.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Marsch continued. “I think they recognize him as a young talent and they want to start to get him into their program, which I think is a smart thing to do. He’s got a lot of confidence, we’re all proud of him and we believe in him. It will be a great opportunity.”

Alongside Abang, fellow MLS talents and former Red Bulls Tony Tchani (Columbus Crew SC) and Ambroise Oyongo (Montreal Impact) have also been called in to national team camp.

Cameroon is gearing up for a pair of important fixtures as they look to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. The Indomitable Lions will hit the pitch on March 26 and March 29, facing off with South Africa in both matches. As it stands, Cameroon lead the pack in Group M with a full six points earned through their first two matches.
