The New York Red Bulls’ Rafa Marquez was noticeably absent from Thursday’s international friendly between Mexico and Bosnia-Herzegovina at Chicago’s Soldier Field due to a right quadriceps injury suffered during a training session Wednesday afternoon. Marquez has already been ruled out for the friendly against Brazil in Dallas on Sunday June 3 and remains questionable for Mexico’s upcoming World Cup qualifying match against Guyana on June 8. Marquez has made over 100 appearances in international matches for Mexico.
Marquez came on as a substitute in the 77th minute of Mexico’s previous match against Wales, a 2-0 win at MetLife Stadium on Sunday May 27.
This season the Red Bulls are 4-0-2 with Marquez in the lineup, as he has contributed two assists in that span. Since signing with the Red Bulls in 2010, Marquez has both started and played in 35 games and attributed 8 assists and 1 goal during his time with the Red Bulls.
