HARRISON, N.J. (September 18, 2017) – The New York Red Bulls are set to take on Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night in the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final from Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. The Red Bulls will look to lift the Open Cup trophy for the first time in franchise history after advancing to the final for the second time.
Kickoff on Wednesday night is set for 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes. The match will also be available on New York Red Bulls Radio in English and Spanish.
The Red Bulls road to the final began with three MLS opponents. New York began the tournament by ousting New York City FC in a special edition of the New York Derby before outlasting Philadelphia in penalty kicks. The Red Bulls then went on the road and defeated the New England Revolution, 1-0 on a late goal from Bradley Wright-Phillips.
New York then went on the road to USL side FC Cincinnati for the Semifinals, falling behind 2-0 before Gonzalo Veron and Wright-Philips struck in the 75th and 78th minutes to force overtime. BWP would push New York into the final with an overtime winner, his team-leading third goal of the tournament.
Ryan Meara has started all four matches in goal, recording two shutouts and winning a PK shootout against Philadelphia. On Monday, Red Bulls head coach announced Meara would start the final.
Recently, the Red Bulls have drawn four straight MLS matches, and are 0-1-4 since the Open Cup win in Cincinnati. The Red Bulls have used heavy lineup rotation in two of those matches, in Portland three days after the Cincy win, and this Sunday, a 0-0 draw with Philadelphia three days before the final.
