MATCH RECAP, pres. by Provident Bank: Red Bulls Fall to Nashville SC

MR vs. NASH 16x9

The New York Red Bulls lost to Nashville SC for the first time in their matchup history, 2-1, on Wednesday night at GEODIS Park.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored for New York.

Nashville went up 1-0 midway through the first half off a goal from Patrick Yazbeck.

The Red Bulls equalized in the 56th minute, when Cameron Harper picked up the ball and sent a cross to the back post of Nashville’s goal, where Choupo-Moting headed his attempt to the far post and scored.

Nashville re-took the lead minutes later, through Hany Mukhtar, for the game-winner.

"I would say it's very frustrating that we are going home with zero points," Head Coach Sandro Schwarz said.

Choupo-Moting scored his seventh MLS goal of the season, which ranks tied for sixth in MLS. Choupo-Moting has recorded three goals in his last two MLS matches and has also recorded a goal contribution in three-straight matches across all competitions.

"What we need is 100% intensity in our basic behavior," Schwarz said. "When we have the ball, for sure, this is also what we have seen at home in these games for sure, then we want to play dominant. And today I can't compare this game on the road to other games, for example, in New England or other games.

"This is not similar. It's not similar because I would say that we controlled, especially, the second half the game, and then they had some transition moments. But this is normal. I said this in the locker room -- directly to analyze, because we don't have so much time for Saturday -- the biggest difference is when we are on the side, then we need these clear directions to the goal, like the goal which we scored today," he said.

Harper tallied his first MLS assist of the season and the sixth of his MLS career. It is first assist since July 13, 2024, against Colorado Rapids. Harper has recorded a goal contribution in back-to-back matches.

Omar Valencia picked up his fifth yellow card of the season and will be suspended for New York’s next match.

Sean Nealis made his 146th career MLS appearance in the match, which ranks him tied for second place in franchise history for most MLS appearances by a defender with Carlos Mendes.

New York will head to Citi Field to face New York City FC in the first New York Derby of the 2025 season on Saturday, May 17.

Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. ET with coverage on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV in English and Spanish and New York Red Bulls Radio presented by Sports Illustrated in English via the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.co
