The New York Red Bulls secured two points with a draw and winning the penalty shootout over FC Juárez on Thursday night at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Dylan Nealis scored for RBNY early in the second half, heading home a long-distance service from Marcelo Morales.
Morales played a cross into the box and found the head of Nealis, who placed it in the bottom right corner of the net. Nealis scored his first goal of the season and the second of his Red Bulls career. His first came in the Round of 16 of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against Charlotte FC.
Morales tallied his first career assist for New York.
Red Bulls converted all five attempts from the penalty spot, while A.J. Marcucci made a save to secure the additional point for New York.
The Red Bulls have won three of their last four penalty kick shootouts across all competitions.
Marcucci has now posted a 3-0-2 mark with the first team.
The two points were not enough for the Red Bulls to advance to the next round of Leagues Cup -- and full attention turns to the MLS regular season and the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.
Morales and Andy Rojas both made their first career appearance and start for the Red Bulls in tonight’s match.
Adri Mehmeti made his first career appearance for the Red Bulls and became the second youngest player in franchise history to play in a match at 16 years, 123 days old. Mehmeti also becomes the youngest player to appear in a Leagues Cup match for New York passing Julian Hall.
Daniel Edelman made his 100th career start across all competitions for New York.
New York return to MLS regular action on Sunday, August 10, when they host Real Salt Lake at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET with coverage on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV in English and Spanish, and New York Red Bulls Radio presented by Sports Illustrated in English via the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
