MATCH RECAP, pres. by Provident Bank: Red Bulls Rout Galaxy, Score 7 Goals at Sports Illustrated Stadium

The New York Red Bulls routed the Los Angeles Galaxy, 7-0, at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Saturday night in a revenge match for the 2024 MLS Cup.

Emil Forsberg and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting both scored two goals, with Forsberg adding two assists as well.

Cameron Harper, Dennis Gjengaar and an own goal rounded out the goals for New York.

The Red Bulls opened the scoring in the seventh minute, when Daniel Edelman won the ball in the midfield and played into forward Choupo-Moting, who played a give and go with Forsberg and Choupo-Moting’s shot went into the bottom left corner.

New York added a second in the 16th minute, when Omar Valencia served a ball in behind LA Galaxy’s backline into the path of Forsberg, who fired a shot into the the left side of the net.

The Red Bulls scored their third goal of the season in the 31st minute, when Forsberg picked out Choupo-Moting diagonal run to the edge of the box and he struck a left footed shot to the near post.

New York added a fourth goal of the match in the 50th minute, when Forsberg curled a 25-yard free kick in the upper right corner of the Galaxy’s net.

Choupo-Moting scored his fifth and sixth MLS goals of the season, which ranks tied for first among MLS newcomers this season. The Hamburg, Germany native tallied his first MLS multi-goal game for New York.

Choupo-Moting has tallied a goal contribution in back-to-back matches across all competitions.

Forsberg scored his fourth and fifth MLS goals of the season and the 13th and 14th of his MLS career.

The Swedish international tallied his seventh career multi goal contribution match for the Red Bulls. Forsberg tallied his third and fourth assists of the season and the eighth and ninth of his MLS career. Forsberg joined Antony de Avila (July, 1997) as the only players in franchise history to produce multiple goals and multiple assists in a single MLS match.

Valencia tallied his fifth assist of the season, which ranks first among active MLS defenders and ranks tied for seventh among all MLS players. The Panama international has recorded an assist in three-straight MLS matches.

Valencia became the first defender in Red Bulls history to record at least five assists in his first 10 games with the club.

New York grabbed a fifth in the 68th minute, when Dennis Gjengaar was one-on-one with the keeper and the Galaxy keeper made a save, but Cameron Harper was there to place the ball in the back of the net.

Harper scored his first MLS goal of the season and his first since June 29, 2024, against D.C. United. Harper has scored 10 career MLS goals.

The Red Bulls earned their sixth goal in the 88th minute, when Wiktor Bogacz played a ball to the top of the Galaxy’s box to Gjengaar, who cut and curled the ball into the bottom right corner.

Gjengaar recorded his second MLS goal of the season and the fourth of his MLS career. Bogacz tallied his first career MLS assist.

New York scored a seventh goal off of an own goal from a Galaxy defender in the third minute of second half stoppage time.

Carlos Coronel recorded his fifth shutout of the season and the 40th of his MLS career. His five shutouts rank tied for second in MLS.

The Red Bulls have tallied 97 shutouts at Sports Illustrated Stadium since 2010, which are the most in MLS during that timespan.

The three goals in the first half were the most in a first half for New York since August 2, 2022, against Colorado Rapids.

The seven goals scored in the match were tied for the most goals scored in a single match in franchise history, the last coming against NYCFC on May 21, 2016. It was also the most goals scored by the Red Bulls in a home match.

New York begins a two-match road trip, starting with a trip to GEODIS Park to face Nashville SC on Wednesday, May 14.
