MATCH RECAP, pres. by Provident Bank: Red Bulls Storm Back with Five Second-Half Goals, Down New England Revolution

MR vs. NER 16x9

The New York Red Bulls rallied for five goals in the second half to beat the New England Revolution, 5-3, at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Down 2-0 at halftime, New York got a goal back from Daniel Edelman, whose shot was deflected and found the back of the net.

"I said in the locker room directly after the game, I am responsible for the first half, that's clear." Head Coach Sandro Schwarz said."That's not a tactical point. It was not a tactical point the first half, but everyone could feel it; that we were not free from the mental side, and we were not aggressive enough and we dropped back. Didn't find the right words, that's clear."

The Revolution opened the scoring in the fifth minute, when Peyton Miller attempted to play through New York’s backline and it found the feet of Leo Campana, who hit a left footed shot into New York’s net. The Revolution added a second in the 30th minute, after Brandon Bye played a low cross which found Luca Langoni, who fired a shot off the post and it hit a New York defender and ended up in the back of the net.

The Red Bulls narrowed the lead down to one in the 56th minute, when Ronald Donkor laid off a pass to Edelman, who struck a right-footed shot that deflected off of a New England defender and found the back of the net.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting equalized moments later for New York, before Emil Forsberg scored a stunner to take the lead.

New York scored the equalizer in the 70th minute, when Mohammed Sofo played Donkor at the top of the box, who flicked it to Forsberg, who found forward Choupo-Moting, and his left-footed shot attempt found the bottom right corner.

The Red Bulls took the lead in the 72nd minute, when Dennis Gjengaar played a square ball at the top of New York’s box to Forsberg, who hit a left-footed curler at the top of the box and found the bottom of the net.

"Great, great, the response from the guys, the behavior of them always to believe in the second half, and this was for the whole group, very, very important," Schwarz said. "We can learn a lot and now everyone is talking maybe from the second half. But me, too, we can learn a lot from the first half and when we feel free and we are from the mental side ready, we have the quality, it's good. And then also that today we had this feeling to come back like we did in the second half, it was great. But the first half, my responsibility, clear."

Choupo-Moting secured his brace, sliding a shot past the goalkeeper, while Forsberg added his second -- fifth goal for New York -- from the penalty spot,

New York earned a fourth goal in the match in the 83rd minute, when Donkor played in Choupo-Moting and he placed his shot attempt in the bottom left corner. The Red Bulls added a fifth goal in the 88th minute, when Julian Hall earned a penalty kick and Forsberg stepped up and buried his attempt.

"Everybody must take responsibility, and everybody has the same important role," Choupo-Moting said. "I would say, I know we talk about leaders and everything. I have a lot of experience. Email the same, and we give our best every time, but we need them as well, and we try to help them as much as possible. And if we do it like today, it's the best."

New England clawed one back late in the match.

Edelman scored his first MLS goal of the season and the third of his MLS career. It was his first goal since June 24, 2023, against Atlanta United FC.

"You can feel it in the energy from the whole group which we had in the second half and I'm really proud of the guys how they respond after first half Philly game; and then also after these two days, three days, after Philly game, between now, the game today and the first half -- or first 25, 30 minutes, I would say, last, ten, 15 minutes were also some chances today. But it was good," Schwarz said.

Donkor tallied his first, second, and third MLS assists of the season and the second, third, and fourth of his MLS career. It was his first since June 24, 2023, against Atlanta United FC. Donkor recorded his first career MLS multi-assist match and became the 12th player in franchise history to record three assists in a single match.

Choupo-Moting scored his 12th and 13th MLS goals of the season, which ranks tied for fifth in MLS. The forward has scored a goal in five-straight matches at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

The Red Bulls scored five goals in the second half of a regular season match for the second time in club history (August 26, 2006).

New York extended their home unbeaten streak to seven matches across all competitions. The Red Bulls have earned 26 points at home through their first 11 home matches of the season, which ranks second in franchise history for most points at home through the club’s first 11 home matches of a season.

New York will remain at Sports Illustrated Stadium to face off against Inter Miami CF presented by Toyota on Saturday, July 19.

"We know that we can beat, I think, any team in the in the league at home, especially, and that that was our goal," Choupo-Moting said. "To show mentality and to show our football we have great players in front and the back, and I'm happy that we did so well in second half."

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with coverage on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV in English and Spanish, and New York Red Bulls Radio presented by Sports Illustrated in English via the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
