The New York Red Bulls lost, 2-0, to NYCFC in the first Derby match of the season.
Goals from Alonso Martinez and Maxi Moralez sealed the deal for the team in blue.
"We were in a lot of moments, especially in the final third, that we don't play quick enough, that we don't be aggressive enough in our ball position," Head Coach Sandro Schwarz said. "When you have the ball 64% that's a good number, but at the end it’s not the best number. It's more important how many touches you have in the box, how many big chances you have. We did not create good enough chances, and then we made two individual mistakes, how we concede the goals."
Noah Eile and Sean Nealis both received yellow cards and will be suspended for the team's next MLS match, against D.C. United on May 24.
Nealis passed Carlos Mendes for second place in franchise history for most MLS appearances made by a defender with 147.
Kyle Duncan became the 10th defender in franchise history to reach 10,000 MLS minutes played.
"The support was unbelievable," Emil Forsberg said of the RBNY fans. "I'm sorry we couldn't win the derby for them today. It's a big disappointment for us. But as always, I think their support is amazing, and we're going to build that momentum soon for everybody. We have a new game on Wednesday. Let's start there. Going to be disappointed today, tomorrow, but then on Wednesday, we go again. It's that's a good thing about these weeks we have a chance to create a positive week coming up with two victories. That's our duty."
New York will return to Sports Illustrated Stadium on Wednesday, May 22 to face off against FC Dallas in the Round of 16 of the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
"We have to analyze the next couple of days, and then to prepare very serious the game on Wednesday and then to be ready against this game, because this is do or die game," Schwarz said. "This is competition. This is when you win the game, then it's good, and you're on the next round. When you lose the game, then you are out.
"We have to do everything at the end from the mental side," he said. "And I don't want to talk now about it's good that we are playing at home. It is more for us. What do we need here? What do we need in our game? What especially then in the final third, when the opponent is staying deep. But we will analyze Dallas and then we will see how the game on Wednesday."
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with coverage on Paramount+, CBS Sports Network, and New York Red Bulls Radio presented by Sports Illustrated in English via the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
