The Red Bulls claimed first place in the Eastern Conference after defeating Sporting Kansas City, 3-2, in a top of the table clash on August 3 at Sporting Park. Jonny Steele put New York ahead in the 27th minute when he took a through ball from Dax McCarty and slid it inside the near post. After Sporting KC’s Kei Kamara answered before the close of the first half, MLS Player of the Week Lloyd Sam assisted on a Fabian Espindola goal in the 63th minute and scored one of his own in the 69th minute. Sam’s tally found its way into the back of the net following a beautiful sequence that began with goalkeeper Luis Robles’ long throw to Steele, who then found the Englishman in Sporting’s defensive end. The Red Bulls sit atop the Eastern Conference with 38 points and a two-point lead over Sporting Kansas City. New York has not dropped a contest since a 2-0 July 4 loss to the Colorado Rapids.
