ABOUT THE MATCH
New York has won five-straight against their Eastern Conference foe, going 6-2-0 all-time and 2-2-0 at PPL Park. The Red Bulls come into this matchup looking to bounce back after dropping their last two contests. After having their seven-game unbeaten streak snapped by Vancouver Whitecaps FC, 2-1, on June 1, New York came up short in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fourth round matchup on June 12 against the New England Revolution, falling 4-2. The Red Bulls sit in second place in the Eastern Conference with 25 points and a 7-5-4 record, trailing the first place Montreal Impact by four points. The Union will come into this contest having lost a fourth round U.S. Open Cup contest to D.C. United, 3-1. Club leading scorer Jack McInerney, who has 10 goals in MLS play, scored their lone goal. Their last MLS win came June 5, as the Union toppled the Columbus Crew, 3-0, at home. The Union is currently in a third place tie in the East and three points behind the Red Bulls. New York and Philadelphia met once before this season back on March 30. The contest saw the Red Bulls snag their first win of the season, 2-1, off a Thierry Henry goal in the 81st minute. Midfielder Dax McCarty opened up the scoring, giving the Red Bulls a lead in the 55th minute before substitute Conor Casey headed in a throw in for the Union to tie the contest. Henry’s game winner came off a Luyindula chip that saw the Red Bulls captain lock up the victory. It was also first year head coach Mike Petke’s first win of his career. The teams will square off Aug. 17 at Red Bull Arena for the third and final time of the year.
