McCarty, Kimura, Pearce lead Red Bulls' Movember effort

Like the rest of his teammates, with the playoffs kicking off on Sunday, Dax McCarty doesn’t plan to change his game at all. His look, however, is another story.

Along with teammates Kosuke Kimura and Heath Pearce, McCarty will be, hardly for the first time, growing a mustache as part of a larger campaign to raise awareness for men’s health issues, primarily awareness of prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. Run by an organization called Movember, in honor of ‘Mos’ (mustaches) being grown in November, more than 3 million people have participated to raise almost $450 million.

“I think it’s a great cause: raising awareness for men’s cancer,” McCarty said. “I think it’s the men’s equivalent to October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a fun thing guys can do to show their support for people whose circumstances are a little tougher.”

Fans can participate as well by registering under the Major League Soccer Network and can specifically sign up for the Red Bulls’ Movember team. MLS WORKS will make a donation to Movember for every participant registered as part of the MLS Network, and the best-grown ‘Mo’ will receive a Soccer Kicks Cancer prize pack that will include a $500 VISA gift card, a Panasonic shave kit, and a copy of FIFA 14. Fans are encouraged to use the hashtags #GrowYourMo and #MLSPlayoffsMo and to follow @MLSWORKS on Twitter as part of the campaign.

“I enjoy supporting Movember,” McCarty said. “I don’t claim to grow a great beard or mustache, but I think it’s fun. It’s different, and I think it’s something I’ll continue to support even when I’m done playing.”
