NYRB II Looking to Gain Confidence Ahead of Playoffs

Stroud 5/24

New York Red Bulls II are currently on a four-match winless streak, which most recently saw the club drop a road contest to North Carolina FC on October 5.

“Unfortunately, at this time of the year if you do not put good efforts together you end up watching and the table is tight, so it gets interesting from here,” Head Coach John Wolyniec said.

The Eastern Conference standings are very tight with NYRB in fourth place with 57 points, while the first place Pittsburgh Riverhounds have 62 points. NYRB II will play their final two matches of the regular season on the road and Wolyniec hopes the team will find some confidence.

“I think we’re in a bit of a tough stretch where we haven’t gotten many results recently and that’s eating away at our confidence. We’ve got to find that.”

NYRB II have not won a match since September 13 and will be looking to snap this streak, when they face Birmingham Legion on October 16. Despite the recent struggles, past years show that NYRB II are not a team to underestimate this late on in the season.

“We’ve done a really good job in turning things around the last couple of years at the end and going on a good run, and there’s no reason why we can’t do that again,” Wolyniec said.

In 2018, NYRB II finished in fifth with only 52 points and had to go on the road for the entire playoffs. That team defeated F.C. Cincinnati, who had just set the USL points record, 1-0 at Nippert Stadium.

With only two games left in the regular season, NYRB II will need to find a way to get points to get the highest possible spot in the 2019 USL Championship playoffs.
