PLAYOFF SCENARIOS: What the Red Bulls Need to Advance to the Eastern Conference Finals

group playoff

The New York Red Bulls will fight for their playoff lives on Sunday as they look to battle back from a 2-1 disadvantage against Toronto FC.

The Red Bulls can advance to the Eastern Conference Finals with a win by a margin of two goals or more on Sunday. New York can advance with a win by a one-goal margin, if they score three or more goals this weekend, due to the away goal rule.

The only scoreline that can force extra time is a 2-1 Red Bulls win in regulation, which would tie the series on aggregate, 3-3.

If New York were to tie the aggregate score with a 2-1 win in regulation, the away goals rule does not apply in extra time. If the teams are still tied following the 30-minute extra time period, the match will be decided in a penalty-kick shootout.

The Red Bulls will be eliminated from the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs with a loss, draw, or 1-0 victory.

Here are the scoreline scenarios and outcomes for Sunday’s second leg in Toronto:
