Red Bulls 'at Forefront of Player Development'

Player develop

“We're very proud of our team and our club.” Jesse Marsch said.

The Red Bulls’ 4-0 win over NYCFC in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Wednesday at Red Bull Arena.

On the evening, eight of the 11 starters either have played for or currently playing for New York Red Bulls II.

With that statistic, Marsch and the Red Bulls organization showcased the true commitment to placing ‘development’ at the forefront.

“I've said it a lot, I'll say it again, we are at the forefront of player development in this country,” he said. “There's no question, there's no question that's where we sit.”

Products of that system and vital contributors in tonight’s win, Ryan Meara, Aaron Long and Vincent Bezecourt all chimed in on the success and fruits of their labor.

“I think it speaks to the culture of the club – from the academy, through Red Bull II, to the first team, Meara said. “Guys know if you play well, you’ll get your chances. I think another big part of it is, throughout the whole system we play the same way from the first team down to the academy. So, you know what’s expected of you and that’s huge. I think, to be able to step in with the first team and know exactly what your role is, it kind of simplifies what you have to do on the day. So, I think its credit to Jesse and the whole organization. Every time guys seem to come up from Red Bull II, they do great.”

Bezecourt added “When I first got here, I think three years ago, it took me a little while to understand the tactics but now I think everyone in the roster, in the first team roster, in the second team roster, knows what to do and even in the academy.”

One of the most success developmental stories is Aaron Long.

“Tonight, I think there were eight former Red Bulls II players out on the field that started,” Long said. “It speaks to the culture of this club and how many young guys and how young this team is and how much depth we have but I think being here for two years you know the system and its easier to help the young guys when they step on the field.”
