Red Bulls serve up margaritas for National Tequila Day

NEW YORK CITY — One of the least known holidays on the calendar is National Tequila Day. No, it’s not as widely celebrated as Labor Day nor does it elicit a line of greeting cards in its honor, but at the AT&T MLS All Star Hub on Sunday it was celebrated with all of the passion and zeal of Independence Day.

With a DJ supplying a festive soundtrack and el Jimador supplying the tequila, Red Bull New York players Luke Rodgers, Carl Robinson and Roy Miller mixed a variety of specialty margaritas all afternoon for the Hub’s patrons.

For British midfielder Carl Robinson the art of bartending isn’t anything new.

“My friend owns a bar so I’ve done it once or twice back in Wales,” Robinson said, shaker in hand. “I think I could do it, but if I was under pressure it might get a bit tougher, but everyone’s really mellow in here today. No one’s getting too impatient. Free drinks will do that I guess.”

Robinson’s English teammate Rodgers said he thinks there is something Hollywood about being behind the bar.

“It’s brilliant man," Rodgers said. "I feel like Tom Cruise in Cocktail.”

Surrounded by diehard fans and curious onlookers alike, Rodgers was the center of attention as he doled out a seemingly endless stream of margaritas to thirsty, smiling faces.

But the tough forward handed out a little tough love to along with the drinks.

“Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, but I think there are a couple of people that keep coming around in the queue," Rodgers said. "So I’ve got my eye on them. Don’t want anyone unable to walk an hour from now.”
