Smaller Houston Group ‘Honed In’ on Olimpia

The New York Red Bulls held their first training session on Sunday as the smaller group turns their focus to Thursday’s CONCACAF Champions League match versus Honduras’ CD Olimpia.

“It’s good to have our smaller group together to really start to hone in and prepare for Olimpia,” Marsch said. “We went over a lot of details today about Olimpia and I think that the guys are becoming clear on exactly what we’re dealing with.”

Olimpia currently stands in second place of the Liga Nacional in Honduras with an unbeaten 5-4-0 record and have not lost a league match since November.

“It’s a team that’s playing very well, a team that hasn’t lost in their league, so we’re going to have a big challenge,” Marsch said. “Overall the idea [is] to come to Houston, which is close to halfway between Arizona and Costa Rica, and then we can get down there easily to get ready for Thursday night.”

As for New York, Marsch and his staff pushed his players for their first full 90 minutes against Sporting Kansas City.

When asked about his players’ recovery from the match, Marsch was pleased to report his team fully recovered and is “fresh and ready to push” for Thursday.

“We’ve had a good two to three days of recovery and regen,” Marsch said. “We have four days of training to lead into the match which starts to feel like a normal preparation week.

“I think our guys are fit and know they’ll be plenty fresh and ready to push.”

The New York Red Bulls take on CD Olimpia in 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League on Thursday, February 22 at 10 p.m. ET (TV: Univision, RADIO: Red Bulls Radio English).
