Wolyniec: 'It Was Our Most Complete Performance'

Wolyniec vs. PIT

New York Red Bulls II recorded their largest margin of victory on Wednesday, September 9 against Philadelphia Union II. The scoreline of 6-0 was the most goals scored by the club since July 13, 2018.

NYRB II Forward Omar Sowe recorded his first professional hat trick, including a first half brace. This brought Sowe’s total goals scored for the season to five, the most in the club.

“It was a really good performance from him and not just because he scored goals because he did a lot of the dirty work and worked hard,” NYRB II Head Coach John Wolyniec said.

Despite the hat trick, NYRB II found some more contributors, including midfielder Caden Clark, who recorded two goals and an assist. He now leads the team in assists with five and ranks fourth in the entire USL Championship. Midfielder Deri Corfe returned from injury and grabbed an assist within two minutes of being on the pitch. The scoring was rounded out by current U-19 Academy Player Dantouma Toure, who scored his second goal of the season.

“I thought it was probably our most complete performance. Obviously, shown by our first shutout, so really happy there,” Wolyniec said. “Obviously, we score a few goals, but that just happens a lot of the times with the way we play, we are aggressive, so once we get an edge, we have the capability of pushing the game in that direction.”

The club recorded their first clean sheet of the season in the match. Goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley tallied two saves and recorded his first professional shutout. On the backline, included two current Academy players, Bo Cummins and Joey Zalinsky, who made his first career start and appearance in the victory.

After the victory, NYRB II currently sits in third place with only five games left to go and only two teams per group making the USL Championship playoffs. Their next matchup is against Hartford Athletic, who sit in second place of Group F.

“It is important obviously, we needed the three points to keep us in the hunt, and it sets up well for next week, a huge matchup, and we really to get something out of it, if we want to keep our hopes alive,” Wolyniec said.

NYRB II will travel to Dillon Stadium in a matchup that has many playoff implications involved on Wednesday, September 16, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET.
