HOUSTON (Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013) - Just a few short hours after the New York Red Bulls defeated the Houston Dynamo 4-1 at BBVA Compass Stadium, the Reserves did the same against the Dynamo Reserves with a 7-2 victory Sunday night.
Red Bulls forward Andre Akpan scored four goals on the night, three of which came within the first 30 minutes of play. Marius Obekop, Michael Bustamante and Ruben Bover rounded out the scoring before the final whistle, powering the Red Bulls to a weekend sweep over the Dynamo.
Up 3-0 thanks to Akpan's goals, Obekop added to the lead with a goal of his own when he fired a shot from 30 yards out that slammed off the post and into the netting in the 35th minute. The Dynamo's Calen Carr, playing in his first match since suffering an ACL tear in the 2012 MLS Cup, snagged a goal in the 42nd minute when he sent a diving header past Red Bulls 'keeper Ryan Meara.
Entering the second half up 4-1, the Red Bulls came out firing again when Bustamante netted one to stretch the lead to four. Houston's Omar Cummings answered back in the 72nd minute with a goal of his own, before Akpan fired toward the far post in the 79th minute for his fourth of the match.
Before all was said at done, Bover headed home an Akpan cross from six yards out to put the final score at 7-2.
