The New York Red Bulls U23 squad advanced to the 2014 National Premier Soccer League finals with a 2-0 win over Lansing United on Sunday night at the Red Bull Training Facility in Hanover. The U23s will take on Chattanooga FC in the finals this Saturday.

Despite carrying the play for much of the first half, the U23s were unable to break through at any point during the first 45 minutes of play.

The U23s continued to dominate possession in the second half and were finally rewarded off a corner kick. After a failed clearance on the initial delivery, Sean Sheridan jumped on the loose ball and finished to give the Red Bulls the lead.

New York then added a second goal in the 78th minute. Rhys Williams made a great run down the right wing and whipped in a dangerous cross that the Lansing keeper deflected away on the top of the six-yard-box, but not out of harm’s way.

Mike Innocenzi pounced on the rebound and buried his chance to put the Red Bulls up 2-0.

In the other semifinal game, Chattanooga FC defeated Sacramento Gold 4-1 to advance to the 2014 finals. The two teams will square off on Saturday, August 2.
