As the college soccer season winds down, teams begin preparing for Conference tournaments in search of bids for the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship. The following is a list of New York Red Bulls Academy products with notable performances in the past few weeks of the college soccer season:
No. 10 Akron: Adam Najem* (MID) – Najem scored his seventh goal of the season against Western Michigan, a 1-1 draw, and his eighth versus UCLA, a 4-2 loss. The midfielder was also named No. 19 in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Men’s National Top 100 college soccer players.
Boston University (RV): Anthony Viteri (MID) – The sophomore has started 12 games and played in 13 this season. His six goals are second-most on the team. Viteri, who transferred from St. John’s after being named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team as a freshman, also has two assists this year.
Bucknell: Chris Thorsheim* (MID) – On Oct. 28, Thorsheim scored a brace en route to a rout, 5-0, against Loyola. The MAC Hermann Watch List player has eight goals and four assists this season.
Charlotte (RV): Harrison Steadman – The sophomore recorded points in back-to-back matches. First against Florida Atlantic, Steadman helped clinch the win for the 49ers with a backheeled assist in the 88th minute, 2-0. In the next match, the forward tallied his second goal of the season against Virginia Tech, a 5-0 rout.
Columbia: Antonio Matarazzo (DEF/MID), Frederick Elliot (MID/FWD) – Matarazzo scored his first goal of the season on Oct. 17 against Henry Martin’s Princeton en route to a 2-0 victory. Elliot found the back of the net for the second time this season the following week against Dartmouth, a 2-1 loss.
No. 6 Georgetown: Arun Basuljevic (MID/FWD), Brandon Allen* (FWD), Alex Muyl (FWD), Christopher Lema (MID) – Basuljevic scored the lone goal against DePaul, thanks to an assist from Muyl, a 1-0 victory. Allen tallied the lone goal in against St. John’s, 1-0, and scored twice in the following match against Seton Hall, a 3-2 win in overtime. Muyl had two assists.
Georgetown clinched a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship in a comeback win against Academy graduate Sean Sheridan and Villanova, 2-1. Allen scored his third consecutive game-winning goal thanks to an assist from Basuljevic, 2-1.
Allen has nine goals and six assists this season, Muyl leads the team in assists with nine, and Basuljevic has tallied five goals and four assists. Lema has started 15 games and played in all 16 this season. TopDrawerSoccer.com rated Basuljevic (No. 14) and Allen (No. 29) in the Men’s National Top 100 college soccer players.
La Salle: Joe Farrell (FWD) – The senior notched a goal against Rhode Island on Oct. 24, a 2-1 loss. Farrell has started all 18 matches for the Explorers, earning two goals and three assists this season.
Marist: Cameron Harr (FWD) – With eight goals for Marist this season, Harr was named No. 28 onTopDrawerSoccer.com’s Men’s Freshman Top 100 college soccer players list. The freshman has started all 17 matches for the Red Foxes this season.
Maryland (RV): Mael Corboz (MID) – The senior tallied his eighth assist of the season in a loss to Delaware, 2-1. Corboz was listed as No. 39 in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Men’s National Top 100 college soccer players.
Michigan: Evan Louro (GK), Marcello Borges (DEF), Billy Stevens (DEF), Michael Kapitula (MID) – Louro and Stevens have started the last five matches, along with Borges whose played three out five. Together, the Michigan defense has allowed only one goal in the last five games. Borges was also ranked No. 71 on TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Men’s Freshman Top 100 college soccer players list.
Louro, the sophomore goalkeeper who’s started all 16 games for the Wolverines, has allowed 12 goals this year, made 55 saves and boasts a 0.70 goals against average. Kapitula, a red shirt sophomore, has played 13 matches, earning two goals and three assists thus far.
No. 16 Rutgers: Erik Sa (MID), Brandon Tetro (DEF/MID) – Tetro scored coming off the bench in a victory on Oct. 20 against Army West Point, 2-0. The following match, Sa helped setup the game-winning goal against No. 18 Ohio State, a 1-0 win. The Scarlet Knights won their seventh consecutive match thanks to a game-winning assist from Tetro against Nebraska-Omaha, 1-0.
Siena: Alex Tejera (FWD) – The sophomore earned an 84th minute game-winning assist versus Quinnipiac on Oct. 28, 2-1. In the following match, Tejera tallied his third goal of the season against Saint Peter’s, a 1-1 draw. The forward leads the Saints in assists with five.
Tulsa: Juan Sebastian Sanchez (FWD) – The former New York Red Bulls II forward scored his sixth goal of the season in a win against Memphis, 3-0. The freshman is the team’s leading goal scorer and has started all 16 matches this season. He’s also tallied two assists.
Villanova: Sean Sheridan (DEF/MID) – On Oct. 17 versus Xavier, Sheridan assisted the opening goal in a loss, 2-1. Last weekend on Senior Day, Sheridan converted an early penalty kick in a loss against No. 7 Georgetown, 2-1. In addition to three assists, Sheridan leads the team in goals with six.
No. 17 Virginia: Derrick Etienne (MID), Wesley Wade (FWD), Malcolm Dixon (FWD) – Etienne earned his first assist of the season against Pittsburgh on Oct. 16 to tie the match, 1-1. Moments later Wade, a freshman forward from South Orange, N.J., scored the eventual game-winning goal. The game-winner was his first of the season. Wade tacked on one more goal in the 75th minute to ice the match, 3-1. The following match, Etienne scored the lone goal en route to defeating in-state rivals Virginia Tech, 1-0.
“Not just the goal, but it was a pretty complete game for Derrick,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said after the victory against Virginia Tech. “He played the full 90 minutes. Defensively he did a good job. I would say this was Derrick’s most complete game here.”
Both Derrick Etienne (No. 5) and Malcolm Dixon (No. 90) were named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Men’s Freshman Top 100 college soccer players list.
No. 1 Wake Forest: Kevin Politz (DEF), Steven Echevarria (MID) – Politz started and played the full 90 minutes on Oct. 17 in a shutout victory against formerly undefeated No. 2 North Carolina, 1-0. The win ended North Carolina’s 16-game winning streak. After routing Georgia State, 5-0, the Demon Deacons completed a comeback win against Notre Dame, 2-1. Echevarria played 40 minutes off the bench and contributed the game-tying assist.
On Saturday, Wake Forest defeated Louisville, 4-2, and claimed the ACC Regular-Season and Atlantic Division titles. The team is currently on an 11-game unbeaten streak and has not lost a game since Sept. 15.
