Anthem Singer: Shelton Taylor to Sing Star Spangled Banner for NY Derby

Shelton Taylor

Name: Shelton Taylor
Age: 17
Hometown: San Antonio, Texas

The New York Red Bulls will feature Shelton Taylor for the singing of the National Anthem at the New York Derby on June 24.

“Music has been a part of me my whole life,” Taylor said. “Ever since I was young its what I’ve enjoyed doing.

“It’s a universal way to connect, just like soccer.”

Shelton is a 17-year-old native of San Antonio, Texas. He plays the guitar and says that although his musical style is always evolving, he fits best into the alternative genre.

This won’t be the first time he’s singing the National Anthem in front of a large crowd either.

This year, he’s performed the Star Spangled Banner in the NBA Playoffs for the San Antonio Spurs and Utah Jazz, L.A. Clippers, Seattle Mariners and more.

“Singing the National Anthem, its not an easy song to sing…its very transcendent,” Taylor said. “It’s very exciting…singing in front of a full stadium is always an awesome feeling.”

When asked about how he will respond when the crowd yells, “Red,” as is tradition at Red Bulls games, he said when the crowd gets into it, it helps him relax and “be in that spot.”

“It’s humbling,” Shelton said. “It’s a good feeling to know that people are excited…when you reach that point, it helps you relax a little bit. It gives you a little bit of confidence.”
