  • New York City FC needed David Villa’s first MLS hat trick to sneak past the New York Red Bulls, 3-2 on Sunday night at Yankee Stadium.
  • The Red Bulls fell to 11-9-2 overall (35 points) in the loss, while NYCFC improved to 12-7-4 (40 points).
  • Off a redirect at midfield, David Villa caught up to the loose ball headed toward the 18-yard box and snuck a shot past Luis Robles to the near post in the 28th minute for the early 1-0 lead.
  • Minutes before the end of the half, Bradley Wright-Phillips sent in the equalizer in the 41st minute to put the score even, 1-1, heading into the half.
  • Wright-Phillips wasted very little time in the beginning of the second half as he completed his brace in the 64th minute to give the Red Bulls a one-goal advantage.
  • Villa, however, scored twice in a span of three minutes between the 72nd and 75th minute to give the home team a 3-2 victory.
  • Wright-Phillips tallied his 81st and 82nd career MLS regular-season goal and improved his all-competition total to 91 career goals. BWP's 82 career MLS regular-season goals moved him into a three-way tie for 14th in MLS history with Brian Ching and Raul Diaz Arce.
  • Per Opta, Wright-Phillips’ 15 braces since joining MLS in 2013 are the most by any player over that time.
  • Kljestan tallied an assist on Wright-Phillips’ first goal and has recorded an assist in his last four matches. The midfielder has tallied seven points overall (1g, 5a) in the last four games. His streak of four matches with at least one assist tied his second longest streak of his career.
  • Tyler Adams recorded his first career professional assist and point on Wright-Phillips’ second goal of the match.
  • Sean Davis recorded an assist on Wright-Phillips’ first goal. Since being implemented in the Starting XI against New England on July 5, Davis has tallied at least a point in three of the last five matches.
  • Luis Robles recorded a game-best and a season-high seven saves.
  • It was the first time in seven matches this season in where the Red Bulls lost a match when scoring at least two goals, previously 6-0-0 when scoring two.
  • The Red Bulls dropped their first New York derby season series in the all-time series, having taken the previous two season series derbies from NYCFC.
  • New York is 38-42-19 all-time in the month of August. The Red Bulls have scored 166 goals and have allowed 158 goals in the eighth month of the year.
  • New York welcomes Orlando City SC to Red Bull Arena for Pride Night on Saturday, August 12. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with coverage on MSG, MSG GO and New York Red Bulls Radio on TuneIn.
