Red Bulls, D.C. United Rivalry Intensified By Playoff Push

The New York Red Bulls head into one of their most important games of the season in need of points against hated rivals, D.C. United.

With five games remaining in the MLS regular season, the Red Bulls need points on Wednesday to maintain control of their own playoff destiny.

“We don’t need reminders, D.C.’s coming here to fight,” Marsch said. “It’s a big match for us in terms of the table, it’s a rivalry match so it makes it even bigger and we have to make sure that we understand exactly what this is going to require.”

Last time out against D.C., New York prevailed at home, 2-0, thanks to goals from Alex Muyl and Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Despite United’s last place standing, Marsch said ‘there can be no complacency and there can be no taking anything for granted’ ahead of a game United will have circled on the calendar.

“It’s a team that’ll be a handful for us like always,” Marsch said. “We have to be up for the battle and then address certain things tactically and then get a big result.”
