Brian White opened his 2019 account just moments after entering the match for Bradley Wright-Phillips.
Making a run down the field, Kaku served in a lofty cross, which White dove for, heading it into the back of the net.
"We made eye contact, he played the ball in and I just tried to get my head on it," White said.
The 23-year-old from Flemington notched his second goal of his career, after scoring his first in 2018 at Red Bull Arena.
"We get to see day in and day out the work that Brian does," Head Coach Chris Armas said. "To come in and provide energy up the field and just a spark and to meet the demands of the game, it’s why we brought Brian in. He’s a goal scorer. Things were going pretty well, so you always wonder which move do you make? We’re thrilled for Brian."
Armas said it's always tough to sub out Wright-Phillips, but White is "connected" to the style of play the Red Bulls use and to do some of that "dirty running" the team needed.
"We know that, tactically, he’s connected in the right way and, of course, it’s good service from Kaku and Brian does what he does," Armas said. "He scores goals regularly. I’m thrilled for him. It was a big goal for us."
White hopes the team can ride some of this momentum to New England, where they will look to get back into the win column after snapping a three-game losing streak.
"It feels good to help the team, to contribute to the team, and to put us into a position to win," White said. "Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold the scoreline but it’s a good result away from home. Hopefully, we can continue this and get a win next weekend."
