Meet Our Homegrown Hero, Amanda Baier -

This week’s Homegrown Hero is Amanda Baier, English Teacher Paramus Catholic High School. This past week we caught up with her to know more about her story, and what she has experienced since the pandemic started. We thank Amanda for all her efforts and for inspiring our club with her acts.

Tell me about your career and what inspires you every day?

I am an educator. I am inspired every day by my students and their potential. I am inspired by the magnitude of my career and the great responsibility that comes with it. I am also inspired by my family because they motivate me to be better.

How much have your job duties changed since the pandemic started?

As an educator, my job duties have always been vast. However, in light of the pandemic, my workload feels as if it has tripled. I have students learning in the classroom and virtually through live streaming technology at the same time. My students, who are choosing to learn in the classroom, switch every three days, and as of right now, Fridays are virtual. The classroom procedures have had to change to maintain health and safety, which is our first priority for the students.

What’s the biggest lesson/s you’ve learned during this time period?

The biggest lesson I have learned is to have patience. I do not always follow through with this, but I am often reminded that I must be patient with myself. I have also been reminded of how resilient people are regardless of the situation. What I witnessed in the spring from my students and my own family was so eye-opening. Now, entering a school year in a way that I have never done before, I catch myself looking at my students in awe as I have watched them adapt. I am also in awe of my own family, and the support I have received.
