MONTCLAIR, N.J. (July 10, 2023) - New York Red Bulls II (8-5-4, 30 pts.) fell in the third New York Derby of the season against New York City FC II (8-7-1, 25 pts.) at MSU Soccer Park. NYCFCII secured the victory in the season series with the win, having won two and lost one.

The two sides came into yesterday’s match on completely different trends, with Red Bulls II having won two in a row and NYCFC II on a four-match losing streak. Before the contest, New York City’s last win was at Belson Stadium against Red Bulls II in a 3-1 victory.

The match was a tale of two halves, with the first 45 minutes being a defensive battle on both ends. There were chances in the final third for the two clubs, but neither attack was able to find the back of the net and open the scoring. The teams went into the halftime break looking to start the scoring, and when they did, the floodgates opened.

Just two minutes into the second half, New York City struck first off a half volley from Samuel Owusu to take a 1-0 lead. Nine minutes later, the away side doubled their lead after a scramble around the net ended with Matt Myers putting his team up 2-0.

Five minutes after conceding the second goal, Red Bulls II defender Davi Alexandre was issued his second yellow card of the match and was sent off, leaving New York to attempt their comeback with ten men.

In the 69th minute, NYCFCII struck again, this time from Jonathan Jimenez. The winger snuck one in the near post to take a 3-0 lead. As has been the story multiple times this season, Red Bulls II did not let a large deficit bring them down in an attempt to come back.

After multiple rounds of substitutions, New York began their attack to try and claw back in the match. In the 79th minute, midfielder Ibrahim Kasule sent in a ball to the recently subbed on Ricardo Gorday, who took a touch and sent one to the far post to give New York their first of the match.

Just one minute later, the comeback was officially on. O’Vonte Mullings sent in a quick pass to Ibrahim Kasule who was streaking down the middle of the field and finished the ball past the keeper to give New York life with ten minutes to go in the match.

Red Bulls II fought to try and grab the leveler and force a shootout, but the comeback just fell short as New York City FC II secured the 3-2 victory.

New York Red Bulls II maintained their position at fourth in the Eastern Conference and NYCFCII moved up to sixth with 25 points.

New York will go back on the road to face Philadelphia Union 2 on Sunday, July 16. Kickoff at Subaru Park is scheduled for 6:00 P.M. ET. Coverage will be on MLS Season Pass with Apple TV, the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
