The Red Bulls control their own destiny on Sunday against Atletico San Luis, moving from the group stage into the bracket with a victory or draw.
New York can lock up the top seed in their group with a win after 90 minutes, putting them on five points, with New England finishing with four points and the No. 2 seed.
If the Red Bulls and San Luis are all even at the end of 90 and go to penalty kicks, New York will advance no matter the outcome. If they win penalty kicks and secure the extra point, New York will finish top of the group. If San Luis takes the penalty kick extra point, New York will advance, but be the No. 2 seed to come from East 4.
The East 4 group will play East 3 (New York City FC, Atlas FC and Toronto FC), with the No. 1 seed from the former playing the No. 2 seed from the latter. The inverse is also true, with the top seed from East 3 hosting the No. 2 seed from East 4.
