Bill Hamid made a spectacular save of Cristian Casseres Jr., Frederic Brillant also made a goal-saving clearance off the line and D.C. United maintained their one-point lead over the New York Red Bulls in the race to host a home playoff match following a 0-0 draw on Sunday evening at Red Bull Arena.
D.C. ran their unbeaten run and shutout streak to four matches with the draw, the latter marking a season high after Bill Hamid kept three consecutive clean sheets to begin the 2019 season.
The result, combined with Toronto's 2-2 draw in Chicago, means D.C. maintains the fourth spot in East standings and need only defeat last-place Cincinnati next weekend to seal a home game in the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs.
Tom Barlow and Casseres came closest to breaking the deadlock for the Red Bulls, who visit Montreal to close their season next Sunday on Decision Day Presented By AT&T. Barlow saw his flashing header headed off the line by Brillant, before Hamid sprawled remarkably to his right to deny Casseres' first-touch half volley off a corner kick a minute later.
The Red Bulls have also preserved a season-high three defensive shutouts.
