ABOUT THE MATCH

The Red Bulls come back to action after dropping their last contest to the Philadelphia Union 3-0 on June 24. New York went down a man after Lloyd Sam was shown a red card in the 28th minute for a challenge on the Union’s Danny Cruz. They fought hard for the rest of the half, even appearing to score a goal on Dax McCarty header off of a Thierry Henryfree kick, but the midfielder was ruled offside. Despite having chances to close the gap in the second half, the man disadvantage proved to be too much to overcome. The Red Bulls enter the weekend tied with the Union for second place in the Eastern Conference with 25 points, four behind leader, the Montreal Impact.

The Dynamo comes into this contest having played to a 0-0 draw with Toronto FC on June 22. It was Houston second game in three days, as it fell to the Impact, 2-0, on June 19. The Dynamo is currently tied for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with Sporting Kansas City with 23 points.

This is the first of three times the Red Bulls and Dynamo will meet this season, with their last encounter coming on August 10, 2012 at Red Bull Arena. That match saw the Red Bulls avenge a 2-0 loss to the Dynamo from a week earlier with a 2-0 victory of their own. Markus Holgersson and Jan Gunnar Solli both tallied second half goals for New York. The victory snapped Houston’s five-game winning streak and eight-match unbeaten run while vaulting the Red Bulls into first place in the Eastern Conference.
