New York Red Bulls Midfielder Kaku Heads Off to Paraguay National Team for Friendly Matchup Against Japan

New York Red Bulls Midfielder Alejandro “Kaku” Romero Gamarra is headed off to join the Paraguayan National Team, for an international friendly against Japan on June 12 in Austria.

Kaku, who draws Paraguayan lineage through his parents, made the one-time switch late last month. Prior to the switch, he had appeared for his native Argentina as a youth international through the Under-20 World Cup.

After Saturday's match against the New England Revolution, he spoke about his excitement on joining the National Team.

"Honestly it’s a great feeling", Kaku said. "I’ve never gotten the call before, and this opportunity came up and I thank the Red Bulls for supporting me, and I’m very happy to be able to represent the National Team."

On the season, the playmaking midfielder has appeared and started in 11 matches, has scored three goals, and owns a MLS-leading nine assist, including three game-winning assists.

Kaku will return to New York following the match on June 12.
