As a starter. Off the bench. As a vocal leader in the locker room. Thierry Henry said he’d do whatever he could to help out his former club following last week's announcement of the short-term loan agreement between Arsenal and the Red Bulls. Scoring goals? Yeah, he’ll do that too.
Henry came off the bench in the 68th minute of Monday’s match against Leeds, his first since rejoining the North London club. As if ripping a page from a Hollywood script, it took only 10 minutes for the Red Bulls captain to snap the scoreless tie and pad his club-leading goal total to 227. Arsenal would go on to win the FA Cup match by the final of 1-0.
Twitter quickly erupted with praise for the Red Bulls striker, instantly making “#Henry” a worldwide trending topic. Opta Sports was quick with the statistical turnaround, noting that Henry has now scored 12 goals in his last 12 matches against Leeds.
CNN anchor Piers Morgan noted, “That might just be the greatest moment of my entire life.” Arsenal’s post on Facebook received over 20,000 likes within the first two minutes of the announcement, while Arsenal teammate Robin van Persie Tweeted this.
Henry will return to action with Arsenal Sunday when the club visits Swansea before hosting Manchester United in the highly anticipated Jan. 22 match.
