The New York Red Bulls have climbed to fourth place in the Eastern Conference Standings after going 6-2-2 in their last 10 matches. New York captured it’s fourth win in the last five outings on Saturday night with a 4-0 victory of Real Salt Lake.
For Head Coach Chris Armas and his players, the points piling up is the result of continued hard work.
“I think the story continues,” Armas said after the match. “This team is a real team and they stick together and they play for each other. They run for each other, and this has been building. I mentioned it recently: The Atlanta game wasn't a starting point, we said. It was a result of guys putting in a lot, and all of us doing a lot, right. That's what it was.”
New York is now 7-5-3 and sit in fourth-place with 24 points. The Red Bulls have used group efforts, with Michael Amir Murillo becoming the 16th different player to score a goal in an MLS match this season.
"Now you see a team that we think looks much like us to start the game, and control the game, in the ways that we want it to," Armas said. "But of course, I mean, I think we all know that goals do a lot for a team. They do a lot for the belief that you can play a little more free. Confidence grows. You start seeing the balls look around a bit more. Guys committing numbers, and again, that's fun to be part of when you're out.”
Homegrown Player Omir Fernandez scored his second goal in as many games on Saturday night, and his first at Red Bull Arena. Fernandez echoed his coach’s comments, crediting a team effort and a strong foundation for the recent success.
“I said it a while back,” Fernandez said. “We've always been confident our foundation is really good, you know, veterans, helping us young guys through tough times through the great moments, you know, and today shows that the confidence that we have in ourselves, and you know, the ability and the type of players that we have, and the chemistry that we have in general.”
The Red Bulls will head to Philadelphia next weekend to face the Union on Saturday, June 8, before hosting the New England Revolution in the fourth round of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 11.
