Match Recap: NYRB II and Hartford Athletic Play to 3-3 Draw at MSU Soccer Park

MONTCLAIR, NJ (August 31, 2022) – New York Red Bulls II (3-19-5, 14 points) and Hartford Athletic (6-15-6, 27 points) played to a 3-3 draw on Wednesday, August 31, at MSU Soccer Park.

Red Bulls II struck just 18 seconds into the match, as Jesús Castellano followed up on a loose ball following a scramble in the box. It marked the fastest goal in club history and is tied for the 10th fastest in USL Championship history.

Just two minutes later, New York doubled its advantage, as Jonathan Filipe finished a pass from Jordan Adebayo-Smith.

Hartford cut the deficit to one in the 51st minute after Tom Brewitt headed in a corner kick that was served in by Danny Barrera.

Red Bulls II regained the two-goal advantage in the 72nd minute, as O’Vonte Mullings sent in a cross that was headed in by Filipe.

The visitors pulled within one in the second minute of second half stoppage time on a goal from Juan Carlos Obregón. Four minutes later, Hartford equalized on a goal from Rashawn Dally.

Castellano and Filipe each scored their first professional goals in the match. The brace for Filipe was the first of his professional career and the first for a Red Bulls II player since Jeremy Rafanello on October 30, 2021, at Loudoun United FC.

Mullings increased his assist total to a team-leading five on the season. He has recorded an assist in two of New York’s last three matches.

The assist for Adebayo-Smith was his third of the season. He has scored or assisted a goal in each of New York’s last three matches.

2022 MLS SuperDraft pick Matt Nocita made his professional debut in the match, playing the first half.

Stiven Plaza made his New York Red Bulls II debut, coming on in the 80th minute.

Following the match, New York will travel to face the Charleston Battery on Saturday, September 3. Kickoff at Patriots Point is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPN+.
